Abstract

Database capacity planning is important for growing transaction systems because enterprise databases must handle increasing users, records, transactions, and workloads without performance degradation. Capacity planning helps estimate future storage, CPU, memory, I/O, network, and backup requirements based on transaction growth and system usage patterns. Existing literature highlights workload analysis, storage forecasting, transaction throughput monitoring, performance baselining, scalability testing, index growth tracking, and resource utilization analysis as major practices in database capacity management. However, many organizations still face challenges such as unexpected storage exhaustion, slow transaction response, peak-load failures, insufficient hardware resources, and poor forecasting of future database demand. This research is important because weak capacity planning can affect application availability, transaction reliability, reporting speed, and long-term enterprise scalability. This article discusses database capacity planning for growing transaction systems, focusing on workload estimation, growth trend analysis, resource forecasting, performance thresholds, storage planning, backup sizing, and scalability evaluation. The study concludes that effective capacity planning improves database performance, reduces system failures, supports controlled infrastructure expansion, and strengthens reliable transaction processing.
